How to Draw Tones

Drawing tones on Skritter is easy!

In Chinese there are 5 tones: a high level tone (1), a rising tone (2), a falling + rising tone (3), a falling tone (4), and a neutral tone (5). When you are presented with a tone prompt on Skritter, it will show you the character, and ask you to write the correct tone shape on top of it to indicate which tone it should be. The different shapes to indicate the tones are shown below.

    1
     High level (first tone)

To indicate a first tone, draw a straight horizontal line.
    2
     Rising (second tone)

To indicate a second tone, draw a line rising upwards (from left to right).
    3
     Falling + Rising (third tone)

To indicate a third tone, draw a line going down and then up, which looks like the letter V.
    4
     Falling (fourth tone)

To indicate a fourth tone, draw a line going down (from left to right).
    5
     Neutral (fifth tone)

To indicate a fifth tone, tap the screen to draw a dot shape.
